As horse-owners we all know that forage; including grass, hay and haylage, is the most important aspect of our equine’s management routine, and that feeding a high fibre diet is a trusted, long standing equestrian concept. As the competition season creeps up and spring is on the way, Parell Products give some tips on how to maintain a healthy level of forage in the horse’s diet for the year ahead…

The equine has a sensitive digestive system and is designed to be what is known as a "trickle feeder". This means that the horse is equipped with a small stomach and intended to eat small amounts of food often. A natural lifestyle for the horse originally involved the horse roaming and grazing, sometimes travelling many miles by foot each day and ingesting a variety of different grasses and plants, often on sparse land.

Equine domestication has changed the lifestyle for most horses and ponies as stabling and regular exercise can mean that a simple grass-based diet is not sufficient to keep our equines nourished and supplied with enough energy to perform, leading to a necessary addition of hard feed.

By providing hay or haylage in the Elim-a-Net, horse owners can offer their equine a forage rich diet in a natural, trickle feeding mechanism. The unique concept of Elim-a-Net, with the Inner Net Design means the shape and size of the holes are altered to help slow down the eating process and mimic the natural trickle feeding process.

Forage remains the most important aspect of any equine's diet in order to maintain a healthy, mobile gut and to keep your horse or pony's digestive system functioning correctly. The Elim-a-Net helps prevent your horse or pony gorging on, or bolting their hay, which in turn protects their digestive system and ensures they have hay for longer periods of time, minimising the risk of issues such as a build up of gastric acid, colic or obesity.

Elim-a-Net is available in Pony, Cob or Horse size, priced from £10.99. For more information and to find your local stockist visit www.parellproducts.com or call 07715 172 470.
