How good is your knowledge of equine health care? Can you readily recognise the signs of disease and the onset of lameness? Are you confident with dealing with injuries and ailments?

Ensuring your horse stays in good health is a vital part of correct management and it is essential that you can cope with whatever situation is presented to you.

To help you provide your horse with the best health care, Equine Education are offering an informative online course on caring for the health of equines and is ideal for all horse owners.

This four week course is easily accessible to everyone; all you need is a computer and internet access. Course members will be provided with plentiful material to assist them with their learning and also fascinating tutor input.

Nicola Kerbyson will be the tutor for this course and she holds a vast amount of experience in this equine healthcare.  Nicola is an equine veterinary surgeon at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School, where she is currently completing a PhD in equine gastrointestinal disease.  Prior to this she worked in equine practice for several years, including a period of time in a busy equine referral hospital. During this time she worked mostly with non-racing performance horses, with most weekends spent undertaking work for British Eventing, local point to points, or working as the duty racetrack vet.

Nicola holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Equine Medicine.  Her areas of interest include colic, parasitology and the dissemination of relevant research to clinicians and horse owners.  Furthermore, she is the clinical practice member on the editorial board of the prestigious Equine Veterinary Journal regularly summarises recent publications for vets in practice.

Four topics will be covered in this course which will ensure that a wide range of equine health elements are covered. The first is ‘Recognising disease and preventative medicine.’ This will provide you with a general overview of medical disorders including those related to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. 

The second topic is lameness which looks at lameness recognition, common causes, and how to understand the diagnostic procedures used in lameness evaluation.

Gastrointestinal disease is covered in the third topic and here you will become accustomed to the different types of colic and differing presentations. You will also explore the gastrointestinal anatomy for greater understanding of problems associated with this area.

Wounds and skin conditions are attended to in the fourth topic and you will have the chance to discuss how to recognise different wounds and skin conditions, their common causes and look at understanding the treatments used.

The ‘Introduction to Equine Health’ course starts on March 7, 2016 and runs for a period of four weeks. The cost of the course is £99. Due to the flexible nature of the online format of the course, you can fit in your learning around your busy schedule, and of course your horses!

It is recommended that you spend at least one to two hours per week working through the material and contributing to the discussions to enable you to fully benefit from the course. You will have access to the course for three months after the course end date. However, tutor input will only occur during the specified course dates.
