Peter Wilkes has been appointed as the new President of the Society of Master Saddlers.

Well known throughout the industry after many years as head of Vale Brothers, Peter has a wealth of knowledge to bring to his new role.

Passionate about excellence in saddlery craftsmanship, saddle fitting and the development and progress of the industry as a whole, Peter’s forward thinking approach should see an exciting 12 months for the society.

Peter will work closely with the Chief Executive Hazel Morley and the Executive Committee, along with the sub committees over the coming year and was appointed to this new position at the Society of Master Saddlers’ AGM held at The King’s Troop RHA in London.

Peter takes over from Helen Dart, with Laura Dempsey moving into the Vice President role.

Said Peter: “I am very much looking forward to working alongside Hazel and the committee, continuing the great work carried out by Helen and hope it will be a very exciting and eventful year.

“I believe there are many good parts to the society and want to get the views of people who feel they don’t often have a say in matters.  It is important to get a wider opinion on issues within and also outside the organisation and this is something I aim to achieve.

“We see change in the market happening at a pace and these new developments should be embraced.

“It is important that we never let go of our traditional craftsmanship while also adopting and looking into new manufacturing processes.

“We need to constantly encourage and train more Qualified Saddle Fitters as I believe without such a role our industry would be in a much poorer state.  The trend for horse owners to believe in and understand saddle fitting is benefitting everyone.

“The more Qualified Saddle Fitters and Master Saddlers can work together the more everyone will benefit and enhance the value of the home industry.

“I am starting my term feeling confident that consumers are buying again and it looks set to be a very positive time for all involved.”
