Better understanding of how Strangles operates is essential if we are to outwit this uniquely challenging disease. Welcome insights from a new open-access paper show that recently infected horses are one of the most common sources of Strangles outbreaks, highlighting the importance of post-infection screening in preventing further spread of disease.
We also learn that more than two-thirds of outbreaks are linked to other cases in a different region of the UK, showing that Strangles is not just a local issue. One chain of transmission reached all four UK countries within six months!

The paper is the result of more than a decade of work led by researcher and SAW Collaborator Dr Abigail McGlennon. Abbi's Surveillance of Equine Strangles (SES) Project has been tracking and analysing information from lab-diagnosed cases of Strangles in the UK since 2015.
Some of the insights previously revealed by the SES project were the basis of a short animation first shared last year. Just click below if you missed it or would like to enjoy and share it again!
