A BUSY 12 months has seen activities at a Cornish riding centre prove heaps of fun while also encouraging more disabled riders to take up horse riding.

Barguse Riding Centre in Lockengate is an Accessibility Mark accredited centre and their recent Fun and Games morning was attended by riders of all abilities, with many having additional needs, such as autism, dyspraxia and cerebral palsy.

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), in partnership with Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme launched the Accessibility Mark scheme to encourage those who do not already partake in equestrian activities or would not usually have the opportunity to do so, to experience the many benefits that riding can bring.

The Fun and Games event provided an opportunity for the centre to bring everyone together from all their regular sessions to work in teams while competing in exhilarating gymkhana style games.

Volunteer Hoof Network Chair for Cornwall, Vicky Rowe said: “The Fun and Games morning was organised to enable our young riders to mix with others they may not ordinarily meet, and to develop team work and communication skills. We often find shy riders will start off only talking to the staff, but by the end of the day they have normally made new friends and start to come out of their shell.

“Gymkhana games are not just for the children at Barguse Riding Centre. Wednesday mornings are reserved for two of our Accessibility Mark riding groups, and the games serve as a brilliant introductions to more advanced riding skills, such as developing balance and hand eye coordination, as well as giving a big confidence boost. Many riders blossom in this fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Accessibility Mark status is awarded to a riding centre that has been approved by RDA following training and assessment. The close link with the RDA means that they offer continuous support to the establishment to ensure they provide you with a first class service and an experience that aims to be hugely beneficial. There are currently 27 Accessibility Mark approved centres across the country.
