Veterinary Gamgee® has been a staple of horse owners’ first aid kits for many years having been originally invented and patented by Robinsons in 1880.
Now a legendary product in the Robinson Animal Healthcare range, Veterinary Gamgee® consists of a thick layer of superior quality, highly absorbent cotton wool enclosed in a choice of either traditional gauze or a non-woven cover.
Veterinary Gamgee® can be used in a number of first aid situations including:
Bandaging – A horse’s legs should never be bandaged without padding and Veterinary Gamgee® is ideal. Make sure the Gamgee is wrinkle free before applying the bandages.
Protecting a wound - Veterinary Gamgee® insulates and cushions a wound, protecting it from external trauma when used as a secondary layer over a wound dressing.
Padding over a hoof poultice – When poulticing a hoof it is advisable to use padding on top of the poultice before securing in place with a cohesive bandage. The padding helps secure the poultice in place and provides an extra layer of support where the farrier or vet has created an exit point for pus.
Swabbing – Veterinary Gamgee® is highly absorbent which makes it perfect for general swabbing and cleaning of wounds.
Compression - If a wound is oozing blood, apply pressure for a few minutes to see if the bleeding stops. If the bleeding continues reapply the pressure. Veterinary Gamgee® is ideal to grab in this first aid situation to use as a compression pad.
