So, you have bought your tickets, made your travel arrangements and booked your accommodation but what else is there to do in Normandy during your trip to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games?

When tickets first went on sale back in November they were available in packs combining tickets for multiple events, so anyone who purchased a pack of tickets will want to know what they can do in between events to make the most of their stay in Normandy.

For those with a passion for history, a trip to Normandy wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the five beaches made famous by the D-Day Landings in the Second World War, along with many of the museums and memorials, particularly the D-Day landings museum at Arromanches and the breath taking American Cemetery and Memorial, overlooking Omaha Beach.

Why not explore some of Normandy’s countryside while making your way along the Cider Route. Normandy is a well-known cider making region with an abundance of apple orchards, so sampling some of the local beverages needs to be high up on your agenda! The route is 40km long and passes many cider producers in the area.

The French are renowned for their love of food and Normandy not surprisingly considering its links to farming is famous for its cheeses, most notably Camembert.

Originating in the village that shares its name, visitors can tour the President Farm in the heart of Camembert to see for themselves how this well-known cheese is made.

In the city of Caen itself there are a whole plethora of cafes and restaurants to enjoy.

If you are looking for something more active to do the Normandy coastline offers opportunities to try your hand at every possible water sport from windsurfing to the adrenalin rush of Kite surfing.

It goes without saying that if you are going to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games you are an equestrian enthusiast and very likely a rider yourself, so, in your free time during your visit to the games, you might want to take to the saddle yourself.

Normandy has a long association with all things equine and there are plenty of opportunities to hire a horse to explore local countryside or brush up your skills with a lesson at one of the many local equestrian centres.

Le Haras du Pin, Orne  is a  magnificent 18th-century stud farm and stables that was approved by Louis XIV as a royal stud farm in order to strengthen bloodlines through controlled breeding, visitors can take a guided tour of the stud and even meet some of the impressive stallions. The stud will also host the Cross Country phase of the Eventing at the games.

If you are planning to attend the games with young children (and maybe some big kids), with Paris just a two hour commute, the ultimate treat to make this a truly memorable holiday for all the family would be a trip to Disneyland, Paris.

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games takes place from the 24th August – 7th September.
