The team at Equine Education provide online courses for horse owners, to enable them to broaden their knowledge of equine management. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn from experts in the field and gain advice about particular areas of interest.
This quality, affordable form of education is provided online and is therefore easily accessible. All courses are interactive, flexible and allow you to become involved in a fun method of learning. There are a range of courses for participants to choose from, which allows you to choose a subject area that you are interested in.
Equine Education was set up by Dr Jo-Anne Murray and Dr Peter Hastie, both of whom are experts in the equine industry. Jo-Anne has been involved with horses since a young child and worked on many yards previously. She then successfully gained her British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor qualification before moving into academia to enhance her knowledge. Jo-Anne gained a PhD in equine nutrition and then set up the first and only online Equine Science masters’ programme at the School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
Said Dr Murray: “I realised after providing degree level courses on line, that there were a number of people that would like to learn more about horse management but couldn’t commit to a degree programme. Equine Education allows the participants to fit their studying in around their busy schedules, which includes their horses!”
Dr Hastie too has been involved with horses for most of his life and completed a degree in Agricultural Sciences in 1998, before gaining a MSc in Animal Production and then a PhD in Reproduction. Peter is currently a Senior Lecturer and Head of Veterinary Animal Husbandry at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, where he is also Director of the university’s farm and large animal research centre.
Jo-Anne and Peter are leaders of some courses, whilst others are run by selected experts in the relevant field. Five courses are currently planned for the first half of 2016, starting with ‘Horse Training Made Simple’ which is launched on February 1. This will be followed by ‘Introduction to Equine Health,’ ‘Nutritional Management of Laminitis,’ ‘The Essentials of Horse Management,’ and ‘Introduction to Equine Behaviour,’ with one per month respectively.
Each course runs for four weeks and costs £99. All you need is a computer and internet access and you will be provided with recorded lectures and links to articles and activities on your chosen topic. Each week there is the opportunity for you to post questions to the tutor running the course, who will be able to respond to you with their depth of knowledge.
The courses were run for the first time last year and proved to be very successful with many participants leaving great feedback and going away armed with a strengthened equine knowledge.
