Commandant John Ledingham, an International showjumper and coach, recently spent time with Hartpury Equine Academy students giving them hints, tips and exercises to improve their jumping.
Ledingham has decades of experience from competing at international level including at Olympic Games, World and European Championships. Since retiring from riding he has gone on to coach and manage teams at the top level including Team Manager at the Athens Olympics, Senior Chef d’Equipe and coaching on the British Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Pathway.
Taking the riders through a series of drills John highlighted the importance of the Scales of Training, working through rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness and collection.
This is the perfect preparation for the academy students that are busy preparing for their seasons. The eventers will soon be kicking in to action as the first events start next week whilst some of the show jumpers are looking ahead to The Chepstow International Horse Show!
Elite Equine Academy Director, Lizzel Winter, said: “We had been trying to get John in to teach the students for a very long time and are very privileged that he was able to come to Hartpury and teach the academy riders who have all taken away some valuable tips and feedback.”
