For the first time, Discover Newmarket, the tourism organisation for the home of British horseracing, is introducing an exclusive opportunity to tour (£90) one of the UK’s foremost stud farms, Lanwades Stud – home to three leading British stallions.  Set to open its gates to visitors for this full day tour on Thursday 16th May 2024, Lanwades is one of the very few stallion studs still to be managed by its owner, in this case the billionaire Kirsten Rausing.

During the tour, guests will not only witness a stallion parade featuring Bobby’s Kitten, Sea the Moon and Study of Man, but also visit the famed Warren Hill Gallops to witness some of Newmarket’s 3,000 equine residents exercising, see the sites of Newmarket on a short history tour of the internationally renowned town and learn more about the Sport of Kings while exploring the 5-acre site that makes up the National Horseracing Museum.

Chairman of the International Thoroughbred Breeders Federation, Kirsten Rausing is one of the sport's most celebrated owner-breeders. Since it opened in January 1984, Lanwades has bred/raised the winners of 2215 races worldwide, including Alpinista who won the 2022 Arc de Triomphe and who gave birth to her first foal in February this year.  Just 15 years-old and still at school when she started managing her grandfather’s farm in Sweden with its 2 stallions and two dozen mares, Ms. Rausing today owns one third of the multi-national packaging, processing and distribution company, Tetra Laval and ranks among the Top 10 in The Sunday Times Rich List.

Price: Tickets for the Tour of Lanwades Stud cost £90 per person, including a £6 lunch voucher to be redeemed at the National Horseracing Museum’s Tack Room restaurant. Tickets for the Tour are available in advance from Discover Newmarket (www.discovernewmarket.co.uk 01638 501122). Guests should meet the tour bus and guide at 8.45am outside the National Horseracing Museum, Palace St, Newmarket CB8 8EP
