The horse stars of the future have taken centre stage at the NAF Five Star Hartpury International Horse Trials today as they stake their claim to qualify for Burghley.
Competition was fierce as the event got off to a flying start with the 4 Year Old and 5 Year Old Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Qualifiers, with only the top three horses from each class gaining qualification for the final at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on Friday 2nd September.
Each horse must complete three sections - a dressage test, a course of show jumps and a conformational assessment. The top 10 highest scoring competitors then complete a final section based on their suitability and potential for world class three day eventing.
In this morning’s Four Year Old class Tom Jackson steered Grafemacht to take the top spot with a score of 83, followed by Ginnie Turnbull with Demi Minutus on 82 to take second place with Sarah Parkes on Zosia taking third with 78.
International event rider and Hartpury equine graduate Robert Barker had two rides in the 4 Year Old class. Having already qualified for the final at Burghley with Hakuna Matata PFB they proved their worth again today claiming fourth place with on a score 78.
Laura Collett riding Calmaro triumphed in the afternoon’s Five Year Old class, scoring 85 Natalie McGoldrick on Galant, also on 85 was very closely behind in second place with Kay Raybould on Passions Opposition in third on 83.
The NAF Five Star International Hartpury Horse Trials runs from 10th to 14th August, offering world class eventing up close and personal with the stars of the eventing world. Excitement is already building for Saturday, which features the pinnacle of the competition - cross country day!
Admission on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th is free of charge and on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th, entry is charged at £10 per person with free entry for under 16s and free parking.
