Fourteen students from Hartpury College attended the World Equestrian Games in France and were treated to a virtuoso performance from Charlotte Dujardin along with a unique insight into all aspects of top level competition, performance and preparation.
Dujardin, riding Valegro, swept the competition aside with a stunning score of 92.161% to secure the gold medal in the grand prix freestyle. Students from the college had a ringside seat in Normandy to see the Olympic champion perform this near-perfect display, with a total that was just 1.8% off her own world record, set back in 2013 at the Olympia Horse Show.
The students, who are studying a variety of equine degree courses, were able to witness various disciplines at the competition, including eventing, endurance and dressage.
They then had the opportunity to tap into the knowledge of the support staff of the Team GB endurance squad, who provided a valuable insight into the services that are on offer for each rider and how these impact on performance.
Jenni Douglas, an Equine lecturer at Hartpury who accompanied the students, said: “It was a great experience and a privilege for us all to have the opportunity to watch the best in the business perform. Charlotte’s freestyle was spectacular and it was great to be there to see it.
“The students were fantastic ambassadors for Hartpury and the interaction they had with support staff from Team GB will be very beneficial to them as they continue their studies.”
