Discover Newmarket reveals jockeys' journey to racing career

Discover Newmarket is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the British Racing School with the launch of an exclusive tour of the country's premier training centre.

A Jockey's Journey is Discover Newmarket's first public tour of the British Racing School and offers the exciting chance for aspiring jockeys and racing fans alike to discover how apprentices embark on a career on the turf. The purpose-built school opened in Newmarket in 1983 and counts Tom Marquand and Cieren Fallon among its alumni.

Visitors on the tour will explore the extensive grounds of this unique facility with its state-of-the-art equipment. They'll also discover the important role played by ex-jockeys, such as Richard Perham and Michael Hills, in mentoring the next generation, by helping improve their riding skills and aiding their development as all-round sportspeople.

A career as a jockey is not the only type of work nurtured in Newmarket. The town's racing industry plays a distinct role in delivering a wide variety of educational and diverse career opportunities.

The tour then moves on to Newmarket Racecourse for another peek behind the scenes, including a visit to the weighing room to meet the Clerk of the Scales – and possibly spot some famous faces. Visitors will then be left to watch the jockeys in action at the afternoon race meeting.

The new full-day tour also includes a driving tour of the town's main racing sights and takes in the Gallops, where many of the equine residents are put through their paces each day. It costs £95 per person and is available on 19 May, 25 August and 13 October. It can be booked on 01638 501122 or at https://booking.discovernewmarket.co.uk/product/a-jockeys-journey/.

For visitors wishing to stay overnight, there are hotels, B&Bs and self-catering options to suit all budgets at https://discovernewmarket.co.uk/stay.
