Veterinary Thermal Imaging (VTI) is focusing on equine back health this summer with its team of thermographers across the UK offering back scans for just £20, and back and saddle scans for £40…subject to at least five horses being booked at one venue on the same day. This is a saving of £10 per scan.

A horse’s back is a potentially vulnerable area that can be compromised because of an injury to another part of the body or due to a weakness. There are many reasons why a horse can have a bad back, but with thermal imaging, the issue can be pinpointed and then addressed, leading a much happier horse.

“It’s not uncommon for a horse to have a back issue,” says Helen Morrell, MD of VTI. “If your horse is dipping, flinching or nipping when being tacked up, or is showing unusual behaviour under the saddle, such as bucking or even a disunited canter or unlevel gait, his back could be the issue. Horses do a very good job of carrying us, but our unlevelness, a badly fitting saddle, his conformation…or even an injury caused by exuberance in the field, can cause a problem. This initial problem can lead to other issues, such as pain related behavioural problems, or even lameness. It can even be a secondary issue caused by the horse adjusting his posture to alleviate the pain caused by another problem. Using thermal imaging, we can find the seat of the primary cause, allowing your horse’s vet, physiotherapist or chiropractor to work to correct the issue.”

A back scan is very easy to do and, as per all other VTI scans, doesn’t require sedation or transport as the VTI thermographer comes to you. Using state of the art infra red cameras, the horse’s back is scanned, with the thermal imaging camera’s temperature sensor picking up differences of 0.05C, making it forty times more sensitive than the human hand. These scans are then studied, interpreted and the findings recorded into a report for the horse’s vet, physiotherapist or chiropractor to use. VTI does not diagnose conditions- this is for your vet to do, although thermographers are happy to offer additional information about the report as needed.

Back scans are available for £20 and back and saddle scans are available for £40 when bookings are placed for five or more horses at one venue, on the same day. The usual price is £30 and £50 respectively. All costs exclude travel expenses, which will be added depending on the location, but these costs will be split as necessary.
