March, 24, 2022, Lambourn. Haygain is honored to announce its partnership with international show jumper Scott Brash, MBE. The Team GBR Olympic gold medalist and the only winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, Scott has added Haygain High Temperature Steamed Hay to his highly regarded horse management program.

Haygain Steamed Hay is best known for its benefits to equine respiratory health. Scott acknowledges that respiratory problems have not been an issue for the horses in his care, however it’s his desire to keep it that way that prompted the interest in Haygain.

“I started seeing some of the top guys have it at the top shows, and to smell the sweetness of it when you walked into their stables.” That piqued his interest and dovetailed with learning more about respiratory disease in horses.

It’s a topic in which growing interest parallels increasing cases of conditions on the Equine Asthma Spectrum. Educational days hosted by his long-term partner Boehringer Ingelheim deepened Scott’s knowledge of and interest in respiratory health. “It was in the course of that that I learned what the Haygain machine does and how it really helps get the dust particles out of hay and haylage.”

Reducing respirable dust in the horse’s environment is veterinarians’ top recommendation for preventing and managing cases on the milder and more common end of the Equine Asthma Spectrum. Haygain High Temperature Hay Steaming is the only proven method for reducing up to 99% of the respirable particles in hay. These bits include dust, mould, bacteria and other allergens, all in sizes so small they evade the respiratory tract’s natural defenses.

Enhancing an Already Clean Routine

Even without clear respiratory problems among his horses, Scott recognized the benefits of feeding hay that is as free of irritants as it is full of nutrients. It’s a perfect complement to a lifestyle naturally conducive to easy breathing: lots of outdoor time and well-ventilated, clean stables. “We want to be at the forefront of everything we can do for our horses,” Scott explains of his proactive approach.

A preventative approach to managing his horses’ health is one thing at the home yard and quite another on the show circuit. “Your hands can be tied in some places. I think the Haygain is really key to healthy horse management when you don’t have much control over the rest of their environment.”

Scott has all of Haygain’s three models. The smallest and medium size steamers are ideal for traveling and shows, and the full-bale sized model steams hay and haylage for those at home. With horses of various ages and stages of development, Scott appreciates the support for lifelong respiratory health that Haygain helps provide. The facts that Haygain Steamed Hay has up to three times the moisture content of dry hay and proven palatability are bonuses.

The international show jumping season is fully underway and Scott and his top horses are on the road contesting the 5* circuit. A repeat of his still unmatched 2015 Rolex Grand Slam victory would be nice, but Scott’s doesn’t need such titles to be a happy horseman. “Your horses always come first and this happiness and well-being is what matter most.”

Haygain is proud to have Scott consider Steamed Hay paramount to putting his horses first and he joins many of his Olympic contemporaries in that regard.
