SMB College Students Win Bake-off at Derby College Inter College Challenge 2023!

SMB College Group HE Animal Management & Equine students recently attended the Derby College Inter College Challenge to compete in a 'Research Bake Off'!

Students were invited to attend the event last month to compete in a bake-off where they presented their research projects in bakery form. They could also present a 7-Minute presentation of their research projects or submit research posters.

Six colleges attended Moulton, Bedford, Bishop Burton, SMB College Group, Plumpton and Derby, with SMB College Group having several entries in the poster and bake-off sections.

There was a high academic standard throughout all categories including 10 research presentations, over 30 Academic research posters and 10 baked interpretations of students’ research projects.

The external judges, Liz Webb, Conservation Training Academy Manager from Chester Zoo and Richard Sands, Conservation and Education Manager from Twycross Zoo had a huge task choosing their winners.

SMB College Group’s Jess Harris, studying HE Animal Management won both the Judges vote and the students vote for best bake with her piece titled ‘Is there a rise in canine separation anxiety due to the owners return to work post the Covid Pandemic’ and Olivia Swinbourne, studying HE Equine won runner up with the students vote for best bake (see below)!
