Hartpury’s equine students have been running a series of charity events that have kept spectators and riders on the edge of their seats.
Two events held recently included a novelty showjumping competition and an instructional evening with a former Badminton Horse Trials Winner.
Second year students on the Equine Business Management degree and Foundation degree Equine Science and Management students were tasked with running equine-related shows as part of their event organisation module; looking at everything from risk assessments to marketing. They were supported by lecturer Jeremy Michaels with all profits going to the charity of their choice.
A novelty showjumping competition provided great fun and entertainment, raising £170 for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. The competitors and more than 150 spectators were treated to three classes of towering fences and a unique water challenge where riders made a splash while navigating the jumps with a cup of water in their hand.
The second event was ‘An Evening with Paul Tapner’. The three day event rider who has recently been shortlisted for the Australian Olympic Team for Rio 2016 led the evening lecture demonstration.
The student organisers attracted a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowd after promoting the event through social media. More than £1000 raised was equally split between The Horse Trust and Cancer Research UK.
Both of the events took place in Hartpury’s International Arena. Each hosted a raffle throughout the evening with prizes donated from various sponsors, local businesses and restaurants. One lucky winner walked away with the ‘star prize’ of a lesson with Paul Tapner.
Hartpury Equine lecturer, Jeremy Michaels, said: "All the students worked so hard to ensure their event was a success and I felt very proud of their achievements. They have learned a great deal about the many elements that need to come together to run an event.
“A huge thanks from Hartpury College and the student organisers to all those who supported the events, including the local community, sponsors and Paul Tapner and his team. Everyone had a lot of fun and the money raised will make a big difference to the chosen charities.”
The students’ novelty showjumping event was kindly sponsored by ‘Just Poles’ and ‘Baileys Horse Feed’ to name a few and supported by Jason Kilbey in creating great courses.
